Longtime lurker here, Been living here since 2016. Household incomes average around $57,533 in Iowa City. Poverty rate is 7.8%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,094 for rent here. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good healthcare facilities
- The safety scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

We moved here with our family and it exceeded my expectations. Schools in Pine Hills area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 3 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (The Heights) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
