What's it really like living in Iowa City?

Random thought, Been living here since 2015. Median household income is $57,533, which feels about average for the area. Household incomes average around $57,533 in Iowa City. Crime rate is something to consider -Iowa City sits at 215.8 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 2.9%, which is pretty low. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Does this match your experience? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely underrated and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (West) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
