The good and bad of living in Iron Mountain

First post here. I relocated for work and It's a a small town city with about 7,508 people. Homes are going for about $117,600 on average. Average temperature is around 42--F, so bundle up in winter. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Let me know your thoughts. Appreciate any input. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 10 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Used to live on the Uptown side, now on the Sunset side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 8 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's exactly what I was looking for. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value weather, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (South) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 47, moved here 1 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Springfield and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Lots of new development happening
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Can feel isolated
3. The healthcare situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for young professionals. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
