Relocating to Irondequoit, NY -pros and cons?

Curious what people think. I'm a 42-year-old software engineer and Median household income is $76,871, which feels about average for the area. Poverty rate is 5.5%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Thoughts? Thanks for reading. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

I've been living here for 4 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The cultural scene is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Definitely worth checking out..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Internet is solid in most areas.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Midtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Nashville about 13 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is decent.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 9 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a project manager, 24, moved here 8 years ago from Miami. I've lived in North and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The job market situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 8 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.
