OK so Born and raised here. Crime rate is something to consider — Irvine sits at 64.2 per 100K. It's a a mid-size city city with about 308K people. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. What neighborhoods would you suggest? Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Hot take but the quality of life is solid. I know a lot of people disagree but after 15 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Riverside. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely excellent and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Old Town) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Phoenix about 8 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are competitive, gas is decent.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
