So, I grew up here but left for a while. Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. With a population of 3,581, Islandia is a small town. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Is this normal for Islandia? The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's exactly what I was looking for. Internet is tough in most areas.

Came here for retirement and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The housing market is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The school system is solid compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in Maple Ridge for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Active local events and festivals
- The walkability scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Urban sprawl is real
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a software engineer, 35, moved here 12 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in North and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Affordable housing options
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The healthcare situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for young professionals. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 1 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.
