Couple moving to Jackson from out of state

Military spouse here. Average temperature is around 67°F, so the weather is moderate. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Has anyone dealt with this?

We moved here with our family and I genuinely enjoy living here. Schools in Midtown area are excellent. Kids love it here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Charlotte about 11 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Four distinct seasons
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are pricey, gas is decent.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 50, moved here 11 years ago from Miami. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The outdoor recreation situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for young professionals. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
