Raising a family in Jackson -thoughts?

Hello, The median home value here is around $1,228,700, which is pretty steep. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

I work in hospitality here and I genuinely enjoy living here. The job market for my field is average. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Bought a house here in 2024 and it exceeded my expectations. Property values have gone about the same since then.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a project manager, 43, moved here 15 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Old Town and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Nightlife is limited
3. The job market situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for remote workers. tough vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $100K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

As someone who grew up here, I genuinely enjoy living here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much competitive but now it's decent.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from San Diego about 7 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Nightlife is limited

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is pretty good.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
