What I wish I knew before living in Jacksonville

Hey folks, It's a a small town city with about 14,345 people. Poverty rate is 16.6%, which is higher than I expected. Household incomes average around $47,146 in Jacksonville. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Friendly people
- Growing food scene

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Cold winters
- Limited dining options
- Boring for young people
- Far from major airports
Does this match your experience? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 9 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I genuinely enjoy living here. Internet is surprisingly good in most areas.

Bought a house here in 2022 and the quality of life is solid. Property values have gone up significantly since then.
