The median home value here is around $155,300, which is actually reasonable. Rent is about $913/month for a decent place. You can expect to pay around $913 for rent here. The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Worth the trade-offs? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. the quality of life is solid.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market is honestly solid and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a accountant, 54, moved here 7 years ago from Denver. I've lived in Highland and Sunset, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The school system situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Highland: Great for retirees. solid vibes, walkable.
- Sunset: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $50K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 8 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into running, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from LA about 14 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good internet infrastructure
- Diverse dining options
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. No regrets on my end..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it was the best decision I ever made. Compared to Dallas it's tough.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.
