Is Jacksonville walkable?

Military spouse here. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Meadowbrook for 9 years. Moved from Houston for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
tech is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is surprisingly good - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Meadowbrook schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Homeless population growing downtown. And housing market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 5/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've lived in Uptown for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong sense of community
- The traffic scene is better than expected

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Nightlife is limited

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for remote workers. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Came here for quality of life and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The job market is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I love the pace of life here. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Uptown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.

I've been here 12 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 40, moved here 13 years ago from Pittsburgh. I've lived in Lakewood and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The nightlife situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Lakewood: Great for retirees. challenging vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Pittsburgh, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
