I'm a college student here and The median home value here is around $583,700, which is pretty steep. Homes are going for about $583,700 on average. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Cheers. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The suburbs are where most families end up. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Sunset for 3 years. Moved from Chicago for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.
**Employment:**
construction is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor scene is tough - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Homeless population growing downtown. And cultural scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 8/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Springfield. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Eastside. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in marketing. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like sushi.
No regrets on my end..

Came here for school and stayed because it's been a really good experience overall. The community vibe is honestly decent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are challenging, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a electrician, 56, moved here 12 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Downtown and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Property taxes are high
3. The job market situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for retirees. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$150K here.
**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Nashville about 3 years ago. The main reasons were family and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are affordable, gas is decent.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 3 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is pretty good.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Feel free to reach out with questions..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I have mixed feelings honestly. Internet is underrated in most areas.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely average and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from LA about 4 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are established, gas is excellent.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
