OK so Military spouse here. You can expect to pay around $993 for rent here. It's a a small town city with about 15,130 people. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Am I overthinking this?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Tampa about 13 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are competitive, gas is excellent.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Highland) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in East. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in engineering. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
