I'm retired and Median household income is $55,429, which feels about average for the area. With a population of 71,455, Johnson City is a smaller city. Average temperature is around 56--F, so the weather is moderate. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Should I be concerned? Thanks! It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I love the pace of life here. Internet is hit or miss in most areas.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely improving and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Seattle about 12 years ago. The main reasons were work and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is decent.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 11 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
