What's it really like living in Johnson City?

Random thought, I relocated for work and You can expect to pay around $957 for rent here. The median home value here is around $238,000, which is actually reasonable. It's a a smaller city city with about 71,455 people. Poverty rate is 12.0%, which is around average. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Low crime in most areas
- Diverse community

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Not very walkable
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Not enough green space
The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Bought a house here in 2018 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Used to live on the Old Town side, now on the Eastside side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

I've been living here for 15 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The nightlife is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall Definitely worth checking out..

I've been living here for 15 years and I'd say it exceeded my expectations. The housing market is hit or miss compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 35, moved here 7 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Eastside and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Friendly community, easy to meet people
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The walkability situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for singles. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
