Not sure if this has been asked before, but I grew up here but left for a while. You can expect to pay around $1,288 for rent here. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. Crime rate is something to consider -Johnston sits at 127.7 per 100K. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. What would you do? The city has invested a lot in new development. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from Tampa about 6 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Definitely worth checking out..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Cedar Grove. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Italian.
No regrets on my end..
