How safe is Joliet really?

I've been looking at the stats and Joliet shows a violent crime rate of 507 per 100K which is above average. But stats don't always tell the full story. For people who actually live there — do you feel safe? Are there areas to avoid?

I'm especially interested in hearing from women living alone.

Downtown is overrated and overpriced. The suburbs offer way better value.

The food scene here is seriously underrated. So many great restaurants.
