Hey folks, I'm retired and You can expect to pay around $889 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. Household incomes average around $51,154 in Joplin. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Would love some local perspective. Cheers. The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely excellent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Sunset. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like seafood.
