Curious what people think. Born and raised here. Poverty rate is 15.1%, which is higher than I expected. You can expect to pay around $1,198 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Justice sits at 31.5 per 100K. Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.
Pros:
- Good schools
- Lots of new development
- Good healthcare facilities
- Walkable downtown
Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Rising rent prices
- Boring for young people
People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in tech. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a contractor, 35, moved here 9 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The pet-friendliness situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $70K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Meadowbrook. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely underrated and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (West) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in engineering. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Southern.

I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Dallas, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good internet infrastructure
- The healthcare scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Westside) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Bought a house here in 2024 and it exceeded my expectations. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.
