Longtime lurker here, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Crime rate is something to consider -Kahului sits at 232.1 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 2.7%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $1,473/month for a decent place. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Would love some local perspective. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely underrated and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (South) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Came here for quality of life and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The safety is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Chicago about 9 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are manageable, gas is excellent.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Good luck with whatever you decide..

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is walkability. Other than that, Definitely worth checking out..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Baltimore it's solid.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Midtown. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like seafood.
No regrets on my end..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want weather, then yeah this place is great. But if nightlife matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I've lived in North for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Close to major attractions
- The walkability scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Phoenix about 14 years ago. The main reasons were family and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Winters are long and cold
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are developing, gas is average.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
