Things that make Kaneohe Base unique

Curious what people think. We have two kids and Average temperature is around 77--F, so it's warm year-round. The median home value here is around $390,600, which seems about average. It's a a small town city with about 10,973 people. Household incomes average around $70,000 in Kaneohe Base. You can expect to pay around $3,399 for rent here. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Low crime in most areas
- Good schools
- Low taxes

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Lack of diversity
- Limited cultural events
The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Fairview. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in retail. If you're in retail you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Hope this helps!.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Highland. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in consulting. If you're in consulting you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 54, moved here 3 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in South and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The traffic situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for remote workers. average vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $40K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Maple Ridge for 4 years. Moved from Baltimore for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
finance is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Maple Ridge schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited high-paying job options. Can feel isolated. And community vibe can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 6/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is cultural scene. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely improving and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Westside) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
