I'm a teacher here and With a population of 155K, Kansas City is a mid-size city. Rent is about $1,073/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 57°F, so the weather is moderate. Poverty rate is 14.1%, which is around average. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely pretty good and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Fairview) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
