Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.
I've been here 4 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've been here 6 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is excellent.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Westside) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. it's not perfect but it works for me. Worth doing your research before committing.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely tough and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Riverside) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from San Francisco about 11 years ago. The main reasons were work and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Hope this helps!.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Chicago about 12 years ago. The main reasons were weather and my partner's job.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Maple Ridge. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in government. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
