Considering Kapaa vs St. Louis -help me decide

Hi all, I've been here for 17 years and Crime rate is something to consider -Kapaa sits at 232.1 per 100K. Poverty rate is 3.8%, which is pretty low. With a population of 10,886, Kapaa is a small town. Rent is about $1,997/month for a decent place. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's been a really good experience overall. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 11 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely solid and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Uptown) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Oak Park. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in consulting. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is pet-friendliness. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..
