Been meaning to ask this. Poverty rate is 31.6%, which is higher than I expected. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Is this normal for Kincheloe? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely average and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Midtown) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Moved here from Tampa about 13 years ago. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Still getting used to food scene but Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been living here for 5 years and I'd say it exceeded my expectations. The walkability is better than expected compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 2 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I work in education here and I love the pace of life here. The job market for my field is decent. Good luck with whatever you decide..

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely better than expected and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in East. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
