Freelancing from Knoxville — experience?

Born and raised here. With a population of 194K, Knoxville is a mid-size city. Average temperature is around 60°F, so the weather is moderate. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Any advice would be great. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I love the pace of life here. No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 1 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Limited entertainment options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is improving.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 6 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 53, moved here 14 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Lakewood and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The walkability situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Lakewood: Great for young professionals. solid vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've been here 11 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much affordable but now it's improving.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 5 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is excellent.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely improving and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Fairview) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely pretty good and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (South) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Atlanta about 7 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is average.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Happy to answer more specific questions..
