Not sure if this has been asked before, but I relocated for work and It's a a mid-size city city with about 194K people. Median household income is $50,994, which feels on the lower side for the area. Homes are going for about $214,000 on average. Household incomes average around $50,994 in Knoxville. Poverty rate is 13.0%, which is around average. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 10 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Cedar Grove side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. community vibe used to be much growing but now it's underrated.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 25, moved here 11 years ago from Austin. I've lived in East and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Diverse dining options
2. Strong sense of community
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Property taxes are high
3. The food scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for couples. average vibes, walkable.
- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $40K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is decent.
