Not sure if this has been asked before, but My partner and I are Rent is about $977/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 2.2%, which is pretty low. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Worth the trade-offs?

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value food scene, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely solid and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (The Heights) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is housing market. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 12 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Baltimore about 10 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited high-paying job options
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is improving.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, the quality of life is solid. No regrets on my end..
