The unemployment rate is 4.2%, which is about average. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Meadowbrook. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in legal. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Used to live on the Maple Ridge side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 54, moved here 1 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in The Heights and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The healthcare situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for young professionals. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

I'm a teacher and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. The community is challenging and there's always something going on.
