Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 15 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely excellent and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Austin about 13 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good healthcare facilities
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is excellent.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Happy to answer more specific questions..
