Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to San Francisco it's average.

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Springfield area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 44, moved here 9 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Cedar Grove and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The safety situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for couples. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are tough, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've been living here for 7 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The cost of living is improving compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Highland area are average. Kids love it here.
