Is it worth buying in Lafayette?

Hey everyone, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Median household income is $222,393, which feels pretty solid for the area. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Worth the trade-offs?

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Highland. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in retail. If you're in real estate you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in The Heights. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in construction. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Cedar Grove. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in tech. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Nashville about 6 years ago. The main reasons were weather and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Affordable housing options

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Summers can be brutally hot

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are wild, gas is solid.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Highland) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Charlotte about 6 years ago. The main reasons were weather and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Active local events and festivals
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are competitive, gas is pretty good.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Happy to answer more specific questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've lived in Highland for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
- The public transit scene is decent

The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for remote workers. Happy to answer more specific questions..

I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Active local events and festivals
- The cultural scene scene is excellent

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. Hope this helps!.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in North for 1 years. Moved from Austin for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
construction is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I love the pace of life here. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. North schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Road conditions need improvement. And job market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 9/10. Hope this helps!. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
