Just moved to Lake Charles, any tips?

Curious what people think. Crime rate is something to consider -Lake Charles sits at 524.6 per 100K. It's a a smaller city city with about 81,679 people. Rent is about $1,090/month for a decent place. With a population of 81,679, Lake Charles is a smaller city. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. Am I wrong here? It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I've lived in Greenfield for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
- The job market scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited high-paying job options

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for retirees. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Internet is average in most areas.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value weather, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely decent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Fairview) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 8 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 9 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..
