What I wish I knew before living in Lake of the Woods
So, I'm single, late 20s, and Household incomes average around $112,917 in Lake of the Woods. Average temperature is around 57--F, so the weather is moderate. Crime rate is something to consider -Lake of the Woods sits at 449.3 per 100K. It's a a small town city with about 8,165 people. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. What do you all think? Any help is appreciated.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 5 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 33, moved here 8 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in West and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Limited shopping options
3. The traffic situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for retirees. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $40K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
