Hey, Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

I'm a marketing manager and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is tough and there's always something going on.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Oak Park. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in tech. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Fairview) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
