Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely decent and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Background: I'm a writer, 41, moved here 14 years ago from Portland. I've lived in West and Sunset, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in The Heights. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

I've been in Uptown for 10 years. Moved from Charlotte for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I genuinely enjoy living here. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Uptown schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**

I've been here 11 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Maple Ridge side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
