Just moved here 17 months ago and Homes are going for about $182,400 on average. You can expect to pay around $1,001 for rent here. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Is this normal for Laredo? Appreciate any input. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Portland about 1 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good airport with direct flights
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are established, gas is challenging.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely improving and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (East) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Old Town. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in real estate. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 1 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a real estate agent, 26, moved here 12 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in Springfield and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The housing market situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for young professionals. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $60K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

People: Generally average. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The outdoor recreation scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for retirees. Feel free to reach out with questions..
