Commute times in Laredo — how bad?

Hello, You can expect to pay around $1,001 for rent here. Average temperature is around 76°F, so it's warm year-round. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Used to live on the Eastside side, now on the West side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

As someone who grew up here, the quality of life is solid. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much competitive but now it's surprisingly good.

Hot take but the quality of life is solid. I know a lot of people disagree but after 9 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 44, moved here 15 years ago from Boston. I've lived in Riverside and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Good schools in most areas
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The job market situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for families. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
