Moving to Laredo — what should I know?

I got a job offer in Laredo, TX and I'm seriously considering the move. I'm coming from a large city. A few questions:

1. Which neighborhoods should I look at for a $800-1200 budget?
2. How's the commute situation?
3. Is the crime rate accurate for day-to-day life?
4. Any hidden costs I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

Totally agree with this. I've been here 14 years and my experience is very similar.

If you can afford it, Lakewood is the best place to live. Period.

Downtown is overrated and overpriced. The suburbs offer way better value.

The food scene here is seriously underrated. So many great restaurants.

Check out the Riverside area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

I'd add that healthcare options are better than most cities this size. Otherwise spot on!

For families, I'd recommend looking at Cedar Hills. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Highland Park and Eastside are perfectly safe.
