The good and bad of living in Laredo

Hey everyone, Poverty rate is 18.4%, which is higher than I expected. The unemployment rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. It's a a mid-size city city with about 256K people. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Anyone in a similar situation? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. The weather takes some getting used to.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Westside. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in real estate. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

Definitely worth checking out..

Came here for work and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The cultural scene is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.
