How much do you pay for rent in Latham?

Not sure if this has been asked before, but Military spouse here. With a population of 14,327, Latham is a small town. Average temperature is around 49--F, so expect cold winters. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Am I overthinking this? The weather takes some getting used to. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. the quality of life is solid.

Bought a house here in 2022 and it was the best decision I ever made. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from LA about 15 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are affordable, gas is better than expected.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Happy to answer more specific questions..

My experience has been mostly positive. I love the pace of life here. The only thing I'd watch out for is housing market. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely decent and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (The Heights) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
