Rent in Laurel getting crazy

Random thought, I'm a 37-year-old contractor and Poverty rate is 25.9%, which is higher than I expected. Average temperature is around 66--F, so the weather is moderate. It's a a small town city with about 17,129 people. With a population of 17,129, Laurel is a small town. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Pros:
- Good schools
- Low taxes
- Easy commute
- Strong sense of community
- Active local events

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Rising rent prices
- Few job opportunities in some fields
Is this normal for Laurel? The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 8 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into running, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from Houston about 4 years ago. The main reasons were school and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good airport with direct flights
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
