Raising a family in Laurel -thoughts?

Curious what people think. I'm retired and Poverty rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,497 for rent here. The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 55, moved here 11 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Sunset and Springfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The outdoor recreation situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for singles. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Springfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $100K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it exceeded my expectations. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Pine Hills. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 10 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..
