I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from Charlotte about 12 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good internet infrastructure
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are pricey, gas is challenging.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are established, gas is better than expected.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. No regrets on my end..

Came here for family and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The healthcare is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I've lived in Highland for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Miami, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- The weather scene is improving
The downsides:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for families. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
