Hey folks, Born and raised here. Average temperature is around 47--F, so expect cold winters. It's a a small town city with about 10,597 people. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. What do you all think? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it exceeded my expectations. Compared to Tampa it's challenging.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Springfield. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in real estate. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from Atlanta about 4 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Active local events and festivals
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is challenging.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Definitely worth checking out..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Worth doing your research before committing.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Old Town for 7 years. Moved from Atlanta for my partner's job. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
tech is strong here. education is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is tough - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Old Town schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Can feel isolated. And weather can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 5/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (West) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
