it depends on the neighborhood

Used to live on the Sunset side, now on the Springfield side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Moved here from San Diego about 2 years ago. I genuinely enjoy living here. Still getting used to pet-friendliness but Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want school system, then yeah this place is great. But if school system matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from San Diego about 14 years ago. The main reasons were school and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Moved here from New York about 13 years ago. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Still getting used to weather but Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely pretty good and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Eastside) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a electrician, 42, moved here 9 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in East and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The weather situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for young professionals. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $100K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.
