Just moved here 13 months ago and Poverty rate is 24.5%, which is higher than I expected. The median home value here is around $183,400, which is actually reasonable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in Downtown area are solid. Kids love it here.

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

My experience has been mostly positive. I love the pace of life here. The only thing I'd watch out for is community vibe. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Cedar Grove. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in tech. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely underrated and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (East) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a accountant and I've found it exceeded my expectations. The community is average and there's always something going on.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.
