Moving to Lexington-Fayette urban county with kids — good idea?
Curious what people think. We're a young couple and The unemployment rate is 3.4%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,101 for rent here. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Thoughts? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Atlanta about 11 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are stable, gas is decent.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Happy to answer more specific questions..

As someone who grew up here, it exceeded my expectations. A lot has changed in the past few years though. dating scene used to be much manageable but now it's surprisingly good.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 8 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cost of living, then yeah this place is great. But if pet-friendliness matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely challenging and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
