Moving to Lexington with kids -good idea?

Alright, Just moved here 6 months ago and Poverty rate is 5.1%, which is pretty low. Rent is about $1,360/month for a decent place. The unemployment rate is 2.5%, which is pretty low. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The suburbs are where most families end up. Thanks! People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely better than expected and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (West) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 36, moved here 4 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in Springfield and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The nightlife situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for couples. improving vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. it's exactly what I was looking for. Worth doing your research before committing.

I work in tech here and I have mixed feelings honestly. The job market for my field is surprisingly good. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Used to live on the Springfield side, now on the Highland side. Completely different vibe. it's been a really good experience overall.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Raleigh about 8 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Active local events and festivals
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are competitive, gas is challenging.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Hope this helps!.

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's exactly what I was looking for. Internet is challenging in most areas.
