Hey folks, I'm retired and You can expect to pay around $920 for rent here. It's a a small town city with about 11,503 people. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The weather takes some getting used to. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I've lived in Westside for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of new development happening
- The traffic scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for couples. No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Lakewood. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in marketing. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
